FTC 1002 DECODE Season Recap - Surging Ahead

FTC 1002, CircuitRunners Robotics - Surge, had one of the best performances in recent years: placing in the Inspire Award at both the State and Local Level, winning the Northwest League Tournament, placing in the Innovate Award at the Worlds Divisional level, and other various honors.

FTC 1002 started the season strong by meeting with other Wheeler-Marietta teams at the Faith Lutheran Church for kickoff. After the game animation was shown, teams were allowed to ask the head Georgia referee clarifying questions.

Afterwards, FTC 1002 went back to the CircuitRunners Robotics workshop and conducted strategic analysis to decide current and future action. They did this by playing a human-version of the game and a cost-benefit analysis of the game.

FTC 1002 debuted at LM1 with their V1 Cuatro, a fast pass-through fixed hood angle robot on a mecanum drivebase. Cuatro played its last event at LM3; it had an overall record of 8-7. It had the highest no penalty OPR, the average contribution of a team, of 63.43 at LM2. Learn more at their documentation.

After LM3, FTC 1002 switched to their V2 ZENITH, a heavy, fast turret shooter with a variable hood angle and a unique sorting system. At the end of all the league meets, FTC 1002 was placed 6th in the league, heading into the Northwest League Tournament. Learn more at their documentation.

At the Northwest League Tournament, FTC 1002 went 2-3 in the qualification matches; they ended up as the 10th seeded team. They were picked by 6047 Twisted Axles to become the third playoff alliance. After falling to the lower bracket, FTC 1002 and 6047 made a run to the finals and won twice to win the event. The team also won the Inspire second place award, which recognizes strong STEM outreach and a competitive robot. FTC 1002 qualified to the Georgia State Championship as the highest team in points.

At the Georgia State Championship, FTC 1002 encountered struggles during their qualification matches, going 2-3, and placed twentieth. At alliance selection, FTC 1002 was selected by FTC 25729 CIPHER as the fifth playoff alliance, but the alliance went out in an early exit. At the end of the awards ceremony, FTC 1002 was given the Inspire second place award. This qualified the team to the FIRST FTC World Championship as the fifth highest team in points.

After repairs and improvements to ZENITH, FTC 1002 was ready to take on the World Championship. Placed in the Edison division, FTC 1002 pushed through a tough match scheduling, going 4-6. At the end of qualification matches, FTC 1002 was placed 29th with a non-penalty OPR, the average scoring contribution of a team, of 140.22. This was the third highest OPR for any Georgia team, and it is currently the 225th highest in the world. FTC 1002 was selected as a second round pick by the second alliance of FTC 17861 CSH and 16917 Gear Wizards, where the alliance placed third in the division. This was a new high for any Georgia team since Covid. Additionally, FTC 1002 earned second in the Innovate Award in the Edison division for their unique sorting mechanism, which you can learn more here.
Congratulations to FTC 1002 for such a successful season! We are thankful to our members, mentors, and sponsors for helping us have a great season. We hope to see y'all in BioBuzz!
